REITs rose last week for the fifth week in a row, according to the FTSE Nareit All Equity REITs Index, which had a total return of 0.4% in the week ended Aug. 6. This is the longest winning streak since the six consecutive weekly gains from March 26 through April 3. Total returns for the year-to-date increased to 27.2%.
Broader markets also rose last week, with a 0.9% return on the Russell 1000 and 1.0% on the S&P 500. Year-to-date returns on the Russell 1000 and S&P 500 remain well behind REITs at 18.4% and 19.1%, respectively.
Gains were widely spread across REIT property sectors last week. Retail REITs were at the head of the pack with a 2.6% weekly return, bringing gains so far in 2021 to 38.6%. Other sectors with total returns greater than 1% included specialty, timber, lodging, and data centers. There were declines among health care, self storage, residential, and office REITs.
mREITs also rose last week, with a 0.1% return on home financing mREITs and 0.5% return for commercial financing mREITs.
