REIT share prices declined last week, reversed a part of their recent gains, with the FTSE Nareit All Equity REITs recording a total return of -0.9%.
Most property sectors were in the red. Among those with increases, the lodging/resort sector stands out with an 8.1% return. Declines in the pace of new cases of COVID-19 and an increased rate of vaccinations have raised hopes of renewed travel volumes later this year. The lodging/resort REIT sector has posted gains of greater than 5% for three weeks in a row, and leads all property sectors in year-to-date total return at 15.3%.
Mortgage REITs gained, with home financing mREITs moving slightly higher and commercial mREITs up 1.3%. Both sectors of mREITs have gains for the year.
