On April 20 and 21, the House Financial Services Committee held a markup on H.R. 1277, the Improving Corporate Governance Through Diversity Act of 2021, and the legislation was adopted by voice vote during the proceedings. The bill, which would require public companies to annually disclose the voluntarily, self-identified gender, race, ethnicity, and veteran status of their board of directors, nominees, and senior executive officers, was first introduced by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) on Feb. 24.
Nareit and other organizations like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce support this legislation and have done so since the 116th Congress, and Nareit congratulates the House Financial Services Committee on sending the bill to the House floor.
