Carolyn Carter Singh, EVP, chief talent officer at Brixmor Property Group (NYSE: BRX) moderated the discussion between Amy D'Olimpio, SVP of human resources at Regency Centers (NASDAQ: REG), Natalia Johnson, CAO at Public Storage (NYSE: PSA), and Darren Moss, SVP, operations & sustainability at Brixmor during the “Navigating the Changing Dynamics of HR, Administrative, and Operations Executive Roles” session at Nareit’s REITworks: 2021 Conference, held virtually last week.
The session began with panelists reflecting on the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Johnson commented that it’s important to know when to be reaction and when to be strategic, but “sometimes being strategic is being reactive.”
Despite the many challenges faced during the pandemic, panelists agreed their organizations learned valuable lessons. In his ESG-focused role, Moss observed further integration over the last 18 months, with the number of people at the table increasing.
Carter Singh said that the discussions around social justice that occurred helped us lead better, as she witnessed an exponential growth in talent as people stepped up and engaged in dialogue. “I think it would have taken longer without a crisis.”
Looking ahead, D'Olimpio said they’re continually learning and adapting, but she hopes her role becomes less reactive in the future to allow more time for collaboration.
