On Sept. 28, the Nareit Foundation presented a grant of $72,548 to the Institute for Human Services (IHS) to improve the water utility services for 129 families and 568 residents living at Kahauiki Village, an affordable housing community in Honolulu for formerly homeless households.
The grant will pay for the complete replacement of blackwater pump floats needed to maintain a clean and healthy water utility system serving the sanitation needs for the 144 affordable housing units. The project – and the Nareit Foundation’s support – became necessary due to the increase in families living at Kahauiki Village.
Nareit President and CEO Steve Wechsler presented the grant to IHS, along with Nareit Senior Executive Vice President Tony Edwards and Nareit Hawaii Executive Director Gladys Quinto Marrone.
“The commendable work being done by the Institute for Human Services and this project for Kahauiki Village shows how the support of REITs in this community are making a crucial difference at enhancing the lives of people who live, work, and raise families in Hawaii,” Wechsler said.

Nareit Foundation Announces Five Grantees in 2022
Wechsler and Edwards traveled to Honolulu to participate in Nareit Foundation’s announcement that five Hawaii nonprofits would be awarded grants in 2022. The announcement took place at a reception recognizing the work of the 26 nonprofits that Nareit Foundation and Nareit Hawaii have supported with $2.2 million in grants in the first five years of the Nareit Hawaii Community Giving Initiative.
In addition to IHS, the other four nonprofits receiving grants from Nareit Foundation in 2022 are:
- Arc of Maui County to support a remodeling project for 12 bathrooms serving four group homes for residents living with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- Hawaii HomeOwnership Center to support the purchase of six homes through an innovative housing and land trust model that will keep the homes affordable for low-income residents.
- Hawaii Island Community Development Corporation to support the construction of a new single-family home for a low-income family in need.
- Residential Youth Services and Empowerment to support the renovation of a group home on the North Shore of Oahu that will house at least ten homeless youths.
