In a letter to U.S. trade policmakers, NAREIT joined a coalition of industry organizations in calling for enhancements to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that would “improve protection and enforcement tools against the theft, discrimination and unfair treatment of U.S. property overseas.”
The organizations encouraged the policymakers to ensure that “robust market access commitments and investment protections, enforceable through investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS), be maintained and upgraded” as part of ongoing negotiations over modernizing NAFTA.
The letter was sent to National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
