The House of Representatives passed the “Tenant Star” bill on April 21, putting the legislation on track to be signed into law by President Barack Obama.
The bill, which NAREIT endorses, would authorize the Department of Energy (DOE) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to create national branding program to recognize property owners and tenant teams that design, construct and operate energy efficient spaces within commercial buildings. Tenant Star would mirror the EPA’s ENERGY STAR program, which encourages energy efficiency among businesses and individuals.
The Senate passed the Tenant Star bill in March.
