WASHINGTON, DC, (Nov. 9, 2020)— Nareit named Nathaalie Carey to serve as its new senior vice president, industry affairs and social responsibility, effective Nov. 9, 2020. Carey succeeds Bonnie Gottlieb who announced her retirement earlier this year after 14 years with the organization.
Carey, a member of Nareit’s senior leadership team, is responsible for several key priorities: social aspects of ESG in the REIT community, including initiatives related to diversity, equity and inclusion; REIT industry affairs; and international organizational outreach, which consists of overseeing Nareit’s strategic global alliances and relationships.
Most recently, Carey worked for the New York State Department of Labor as executive deputy commissioner (chief operating officer) and in this role, she was responsible for providing unemployment benefits, supporting workers and creating employment opportunities for residents throughout New York state. Her prior position at the state’s DOL included deputy commissioner of administration and chief financial officer. Carey served as assistant comptroller in the Office of the New York State Comptroller’s Division of Local Government & School Accountability, before joining the DOL. She was also a member of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s NYS Women’s Pay Equity Panel.
Commenting on Carey’s appointment, Steven A. Wechsler, president and CEO, Nareit, said, “Nathaalie has had extensive experience working with multiple stakeholders to build consensus and move projects forward, which will be highly relevant to her role at Nareit as she forges new collaborative relationships with REIT industry leaders. From day one, Nathaalie will be focused on the REIT industry’s social responsibility initiatives, working in close collaboration with REIT industry executives on a host of critically important ESG-related matters.”
Carey said, “I’m looking forward to joining the team at Nareit, working collaboratively with colleagues on ESG matters, particularly those that will advance the social responsibility efforts of the REIT industry, and being a global ambassador for Nareit and the REIT community.”
Carey is a member of the Women @ Work advisory board and chairs the SUNY Albany Liberty Partnership Program advisory board. She has received numerous community, public service, and leadership awards during her career. She received a B.A. in English, and an MPA, Finance & Leadership, from the State University of New York at Binghamton.
