In addition to delivering a 16.82 percent total return, Home Financing REITs led the REIT market with a 10.72 percent dividend yield at the end of April 2017, outperforming the 9.55 percent dividend yield for the FTSE NAREIT Mortgage REITs Index of all Mortgage REITs. In comparison, the dividend yield of the S&P 500 Index was 2.01%
Half of the 16 Equity REIT market segments had dividend yields higher than the yield of the FTSE NAREIT All Equity REITs Index at the end of April. They were:
- Specialty – 5.80%
- Health Care – 5.17%
- Lodging/Resorts – 5.14%
- Free Standing Retail – 4.81%
- Regional Malls – 4.55%
- Diversified – 4.51%
- Shopping Centers – 4.39%
- Self-Storage – 4.02%
