Natalia Johnson, chief administrative officer at Public Storage (NYSE: PSA), participated in a video interview in conjunction with Nareit’s REITworks: 2021 Conference.
Johnson discussed some of the key factors driving change within C-suite roles today. She pointed to the speed of change, the complexity of issues, and the fact that there is constant innovation. “There’s a lot more for the C-suite to be constantly focusing on,” she said.
As for the biggest changes in the functions Johnson personally carries out, human resources and technology have become “critical” today, she said.
“Human capital has never been more challenging…people have been dealing with a lot of stress and change not only at work but also in their personal lives,” Johnson said. Due to people reassessing their employment choices as a result of the pandemic, “this is one of the most competitive labor markets we have ever seen,” she added.
Johnson also noted that with the nature of C-suite roles changing, there are new challenges when it comes to finding the right talent to fill positions. “The combination of functional expertise and a high level of leadership and personal integrity and courage is not easy to find,” she said.
