Raul Martinez Solares, CEO of Fibra Educa (BMV: EDUCA18), sat down for a video interview at Nareit’s REITweek: 2024 Investor Conference, held in New York from June 3-6.
Martinez Solares said that Fibra Educa stands out as the only REIT in the world focusing exclusively on the development and acquisition of educational properties in Mexico. The company’s primary target is low to middle-income families, particularly in college education, he added.
Martinez Solares highlighted that Fibra Educa's immediate priority is to continue its growth trajectory by acquiring additional properties.
"We are aiming to at least a coverage of 10.4%," he said, emphasizing the company's goal to expand its gross leasable area (GLA) by 20% this year. This growth aligns with the increasing demand for educational services in Mexico, providing profitable opportunities for stakeholders.
Martinez Solares said that investors have expressed concerns about the impact of online education on physical infrastructure.
"In Mexico, in those income levels, the education will be in the next decades,” he added, underscoring the importance of on-site education for developing soft skills and preparing students for the workforce.
Regarding sustainability, Martinez Solares said Fibra Educa is implementing several initiatives. The company has linked its sustainability program to key performance indicators (KPIs) focused on emissions, energy efficiency, and social mobility through scholarships for low-income women.
"For us, it's not only a necessity but a strong commitment for the future," he noted.
