Owen Thomas, chairman and CEO of BXP (NYSE: BXP), participated in a video interview at Nareit’s REITworld: 2022 Annual Conference held in San Francisco on Nov. 15-17.
Thomas said that BXP has a role to play as a landlord in helping tenants get their workforces back in the office following the pandemic.
“Having premier workplaces—the highest quality buildings; having buildings located near transit; having highly amenitized buildings, is [all] very important,” he said.
Thomas said that BXP had a very active 2022 in dispositions, having sold about $860 million of properties, but that there’s been a slowdown in capital market activity more recently.
Turning to BXP’s ESG efforts, Thomas said the REIT is most focused on its goal of reaching net zero by 2025. BXP was named Nareit’s 2022 Leader in the Light office sector award co-winner.
“We’ve lowered our emissions about 70% over the last 10 years or so, and that’s come through primarily building efficiency and green power purchase arrangements,” he said. “We’ll be continuing to execute that over the next couple of years.”
