Governance Expert Highlights Importance of Diversity of Perspectives

Jim Hanks, Jr., partner at Venable LLP, participated in a video interview at Nareit’s REITwise: 2019 Law, Accounting & Finance Conference in San Antonio.

Hanks discussed the 2019 proxy season and that bylaws still seem to be a big issue for REITs formed in Maryland. He also commented on changes to the law that REITs incorporated in Maryland need to be aware of.

Turning to diversity, Hanks noted that “the most important type of diversity is diversity of perspectives. There’s no question that in many situations, women directors can bring a perspective that would not otherwise be present in the board room. The same [is true] with minority candidates.”
